Rey Crespo was born in Havana, Cuba in 1954. His encounter with music began with the guitar at the age of 10. Later in university, he finished his degree in Archaeology and Architecture, but it was in 1964 when he fully started to develop his real passion in life at the Alejandro Garcia Caturla School, where he studied Guitar, Singing and Music Appreciation. He went on to the Ignacio Cervantes School, where he graduated in Electric Bass, Double Bass, Harmony Counterpoint, Fugue and Orchestration. At the Felix Varela School, he studied Musical Direction and Orchestration with Armando Romeu, a graduate of the Berklee College of Music.
In 1972, he began as a bass player and backing singer of Los Keleya Show Band. With this orchestra he toured Canada, Italy, Panama, Algeria, Finland, France and Spain.
In 1986, Rey founded his own band Proyection Cubana, with whom he performed in different scenarios around Europe. In 1989, his band developed a different style and changed name to Saoco Son. They were residence musicians at the Cabaret Tropicana for many years, backing some of the most famous Cuban artists like Malena and Elena Burke, Omara Portuondo y Hector Tellez.
As well, they had the beautiful opportunity to support Omara Portuondo and Martin Rojas in their tour in Finland and Cancun too.
In 1997, Rey was invited to England to conduct the Charangueros Orchestra, a band encountering Cuban and British musicians, and continued his career as an international artist performing in different salsa concerts, mainly in Cuba and Spain.
From 1999 to 2001, he resided temporally in London to conduct several salsa bands like Conjunto Saboroso, Billongo All Stars, Balangandan Band, Cubanito Band and Chacon y su Banda. In 2000, Rey became the Musical Director of the Viva la Salsa festival.
Rey had participated as arranger and producer with outstanding musicians such as: HilarioDuran, Demetrio Muniz, Ruben Gonzales, Orlando Lopez (Cachaito) and Lazaro Valdez (Bamboleo), Jesus Alemany( Cubanismo ).
Rey continuos working in the England to doing arranger, producer, ect... also he's a musical director and bassplayer The Ska Cubano band, his owned band that called Cuban Ensemble
